Day 1: Tuesday, August 1 - Drive & Set Up
We got packed up and on the road by about 9:30. We stopped at a rest stop near Cadillac to eat the sandwiches we had packed. Then we were on the road again and got to the bridge, there was a lot of traffic because of construction. We made it to Newberry Campground by about 3:30. Mom and Dad set up the camper while the kids played mini golf. We had walking tacos and then played mini golf again. We’re not super impressed with the campground, but it has a small pool and mini golf. We all went to bed around 10:00.
Day 2: Wednesday, August 2 - Tahquamenon Falls
Dad got up at 6:30 and went for a run. Everyone else woke up soon after and we all ate breakfast at the camper. Then we were on the road to Tahquamenon Falls. We started at the lower falls and hiked to the bridge. We couldn’t take a row boat like the last time. We hiked and played in the water and all had fun. Then we had lunch at the same brewery as 2 years ago. Henry had fish, Stella had ravioli, Leila had a burger, Mom had a grilled cheese, and Dad had a pastie. It was delicious. Next, we hiked to the upper falls. Everyone was ready to be done, we stopped at the bear ranch, but NO ONE had any interest so we just went back to the campground. We're gonna do hobo pies for supper. After supper, we went to Ice Cream Bandits for dessert. Then Dad and the kids played mini golf. Afterward, Mom took Stella and Henry to the pool. Time for bed. Dad got locked in a shower.
Day 3: Thursday, August 3 - Marquette
We all got up between 6:45-7:30. We ate breakfast at the camper and packed sandwiches and our swimsuits. We were on the road to Marquette by about 8:30. It was about a 2 hour drive with our stops. First we went to Sugarloaf Mountain. It was a nice trail to start, but then got a little rocky and hilly with roots. There were lots of cool lookout points and the views of the landscapes and Lake Superior were awesome, even though we were all sweating like crazy at the top. We hiked for 1 hour and then went to Presque Isle. We ate our picnic lunch and then we drove through the park to the rocks. We hiked a little bit and then we found where everyone was jumping of the cliffs. We watched for a little while and then decided to give it a try. We went to the car and changed into our suits. Then we hiked back to the rocks. Dad jumped in first, it was scary and fun at the same time. Then Stella jumped, followed by Henry. Stella panicked a little, she kept trying to grab dad, almost pulling him under. But she made it to shore fine. Henry lost his watershoes, but then swam to shore. A nice guy got them and gave them back though. Henry and dad got in line again while Mom and Leila watched. Stella found a lower point to jump from and then she jumped a couple of times. We hiked back to the car and enjoyed more views of Lake Superior. The water was very cool and refreshing. After the rocks, we drove to the Walmart for some water and a few supplies. Then we took the drive back to Newberry, and ate supper at Pizza Hut right by the campground, and mom picked up some McDonald’s for Henry. After, mom insisted we go back to Ice Cream Bandit, she got a twist, and Stella and Dad got vanilla to share for their mini pies we got from Walmart. Then we did a quick dip in the pool and showered. Now it’s time for bed!
Day 4: Friday, August 4 - Mackinac Island
Dad got up at 6:00 to run. Everyone else got woken up by Mom at 7:00 so that we could eat breakfast and then get on the road to St. Ignace, we just got there in time to make the 9:30 ferry which went underneath the Mighty Mac! As soon as we got to the island, we walked to a bike rental place. Dad and Stella started with a tandem, but that quickly revealed it wouldn’t work. We all got our own bikes and were on our way. We made it a little over 2 miles when the girls wanted a break because they didn’t like their bikes. Mom decided that she and the girls would turn around and hang out in the shop while Dad and Henry continued the trek around the island. The boys were done biking by around noon and then we met at the Yankee Rebel Tavern for lunch, the same place as last time. Next we walked to Arch Rock to take some pictures. Then we sat by the rocks on lake Huron for a few minutes. Stella and Henry each found a piece of beach glass. Afterwards, we went back to town for more souvenirs and fudge. We sampled some really good flavors and then settled on 4 flavors from the Murray Hotel. We were getting tired and it was pretty crowded so we got on the ferry back to St. Ignace. We got there at around 4:45. We took a quick drive to see Straits State Park, where we stayed 2 years ago. Afterwards we made the drive back to Newberry to our camper. We ate walking tacos for supper and next we’re gonna have smores. We had our only fire of the trip and went to the pool and then bed.
Day 5: Saturday, August 5 - Pack Up & Drive
Dad got up for another run - this one went right by the prison. Then we went for breakfast at Zellar’s Village Inn After breakfast, we got gas and went back to the campground, Dad, Stella, and Henry went to the pool while mom and Leila went to look for souveniers. Then we had lunch and started to pack up. We were on the road by 1:15 but needed to stop in St. Ignace since Leila still hadn’t found a souvenir. She found a cute sweatshirt at the Indian village. Then we got back on the road. It took a while to get onto the bridge because there was a mini cooper festival/parade. The drive was uneventful, thankfully, we stopped at McDonalds in Big Rapids for supper and made it home by about 7:30. We covered 1,125 miles! Another FUN TRIP!
